Emerson Duo Nets Tony Noms for ‘Death Becomes Her’

An Emerson College duo received Tony Award nominations for the Broadway hit musical Death Becomes Her.

Julia Mattison ’11 and Noel Carey ’11 were nominated for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.

In addition, ShowTown Theatricals, the company founded and led by Nathan Gehan ’99 was a co-producer and general manager of Best Play nominee Oh, Mary!

The musical is based on the 1992 film that tells the story of rivals who seek immortality.

In total, Death Becomes Her is up for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, tied for most nominations with Buena Vista Social Club and Maybe Happy Ending.

In addition, ShowTown Theatricals, the company founded and led by Nathan Gehan ’99 was a co-producer and general manager of Best Play nominee Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary!, written and performed by Cole Escola, tells the story of Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to her husband’s assassination.

The Tonys will be presented Sunday, June 8, at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, in a ceremony hosted by Cynthia Erivo, and will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
