Mattison ’11, Carey ’11 Took Sense of Absurdity from Emerson to Broadway: Broadway Buzz

Broadway Buzz interviewed Julia Mattison ’11 and Noel Carey ’11, the composing duo behind the new Broadway adaptation of Death Becomes Her, about their partnership, their art, and their Emerson roots.

The article opens with Mattison and Carey, both Musical Theatre majors, giggling together in the back of Emerson classrooms, because, Carey said, “Both of us just needed to be ridiculous.” It was a desire that served them well when they were writing the music for the show, about two frenemies and their eternal grudge.

Broadway Buzz writes:

“The pair’s first (unofficial) collaboration at college was a fake historical tour dubbed The ‘That Guy’ Tour of Boston. A project for history class, the tour provided fictional information about unimportant figures from the city’s history, including a man facing the wrong way in an image from the Boston Tea Party. ‘We just made up pure nonsense, and got an A,’ said Mattison. ‘So then we realized: ‘OK, creativity might take us far here.””
