Sweat, Strategy, and Success: Inside Emerson College’s Soccer Training Camps
Before kicking off their seasons, Emerson College men’s and women’s soccer teams sweated it out in August during training camps.
The teams worked to build camaraderie and that connection feeling that only teammates develop.
David Suvak is now in his 13th season as head coach for the women’s team, having previously led the team to a national ranking in the 2022 season.
“We have a style of play we want to impose on our opponents which should lead to success. We want to play and compete well to advance into the NEWMAC Championships,” said Suvak.
Suvak said the team has a group of experienced returning players who know what it takes to be successful this season. He added those players have welcomed the new players and the team is gelling well.
The women’s team is currently 1-2-1 after opening the season with a shutout win against Gettysburg College, then falling twice, and tying Gordon College, 1-1, on September 7.

Men’s Head Coach Liam McKersie is in his second year in the position, and learned a lot from his rookie season.
“The biggest point is, in principle, narrowing our focus as a staff and doing as well as we can each at step, rather than stretching ourselves too wide with a variety of tasks and ideas,” said McKersie. “We have really simplified our on field instruction, our game model, as well as our goals. We have only broadened our focus and complexity when we have fully implemented our principles and foundation.”
He said the team has eight new players, and the team is working on building chemistry and on-field identity.
The men’s team is currently 1-2 after being shutout 3-0 in their opening game against Roger Williams University, and following that up with a 3-2 win against Gordon College.
