Professor and Graduate Program Director Mako Yoshikawa spoke with GBH about how her complicated relationships with her late father led to writing her new memoir Secrets of the Sun.
When she was getting ready for her wedding rehearsal dinner in 2010, she got a call from police, telling her that her estranged father, who was not invited to the wedding, had passed away.

After getting that call, I was thrown into this kind of chaos, this guilt and confusion and grief. And so after that, I knew I needed to start researching and writing about my father.
