Public Health Announcement Re: Gonorrhea

Dear Emerson Community,

We are sending this letter as a follow-up to the recent announcement by the Massachusetts Public Health Department that 2 cases of multidrug-resistant strains of gonorrhea have been identified in the state of Massachusetts.

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that can be spread through unprotected sexual contact and can be prevented by using condoms, avoiding sexual activity if symptoms are present, and participating in routine screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

As advocates for the health and safety of our students, staff, faculty, and surrounding community, it is our responsibility to raise awareness, provide reassurance, and encourage safe sexual practices and screening. STI screening is available at Emerson Wellness Center – Health Services, local STI clinics, urgent care clinics, and primary care offices.

Additional updates will be provided as they become available. More information can be found on the following sites: CDC.gov and mass.gov

Thank you and be well.
