Graduate Students Stone & Wright Discuss Representation at Oscars: Boston 25

Visual and Media Arts graduate students Xzaviah Jamel Stone Sr and Tarell Wright spoke with Boston 25 reporter Crystal Hynes about diversity and representation at the Oscars and in the film industry.

The 93rd Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday, featured historic wins by Nomadland director Chloe Zhao and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s Makeup and Hairstyle winners Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson.

Stone and Wright say more diverse filmmakers are needed in the industry, and particularly in high-profile roles.

Wright explains one of the reasons for going into filmmaking:

We were never pushed to be the producer, or be the director or the cinematographer; the people that are quarterbacking the whole filmmaking process, so that’s another reason I am going to film school right now, to set the example.
