UPDATE: Red Sox World Series Parade to Affect Class Schedules
This message has been updated to reflect additional potential scheduling changes.
Dear Emerson community,
On Wednesday, October 31, there will be a parade in Boston for World Series champions, the Boston Red Sox. The parade/rolling rally of about 25 Duck Boats carrying Red Sox players, coaches and family members is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
The Duck Boats in the parade will travel through the heart of Emerson’s campus, arriving approximately between 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Information about road restrictions is available here.
From past parade experiences, crowds will begin to gather early, starting around 9:30 am. Moving along the sidewalks on Boylston and Tremont streets will be difficult. There will likely be Boston Police barriers on both sides of the street, with no crossing allowed from the Boston Common side, including to and from the Boylston Street Green Line Station.
For this reason, the College has determined that the Boston campus classes with the following start times are canceled on Wednesday, October 31:
- 10:00 am
- 11:30 am
- 12:00 pm
- 1:00 pm
- 2:00 pm
- 2:30 pm
In addition, faculty members who teach classes that run from 8:30-11:15 am or 9:00-11:45 am, are being asked to end classes early and release students by 10:30 am.
Classes that begin at 3:00 pm or later will proceed as scheduled. Please note that all administrative offices will operate under normal schedules.
We realize that the crowds on Wednesday will make it difficult to pass through the streets so please allow extra time to get to a class or to move about campus during this time.
If you plan to view the parade, the College has arranged for Bon Appetit to provide snacks for community members on the second floor of the Walker Building (rooms 201, 231, 232), as well as on the two second floor lounges/seating areas on the second floor of Piano Row.
For security purposes, exterior building doors on College buildings, including residence halls and the Dining Hall, will remain locked from 7 am – 3 pm, however students, faculty and staff will be able to “tap in” to enter. The Dining Hall will be open normal hours; however, students should access the facility through the 25 Boylston Place entrance. The College Bookstore will be closed from 9:30 am to approximately 3:00 pm.
For community members who use the Boston Common Garage for parking, please note that between 10:00 am–4:00 pm the entrance to the garage will be restricted. You will still be able to leave the garage during those posted hours.
The Emerson College Police Department (ECPD) will keep the entryways to Emerson buildings clear. As usual, only Emerson students, faculty, staff, and authorized visitors will have access.
If you plan to attend Wednesday’s parade, have fun and please be safe!
Sincerely,
Lee Pelton
