Cutler accepts cultural award at State House
The Theodore H. Cutler (’51) Family Charitable Trust received the Commonwealth Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in a February 9 ceremony at the Massachusetts State House.
Ted and his late wife Joan Cutler, founders of the Trust, have long supported Emerson College and many other important cultural and charitable organizations in Boston. Ted Cutler ’51 chaired the Emerson Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2007 and is now a Trustee Emeritus and Chair of the Emerson Boston Arts Committee.
The Commonwealth Award recognizes the extraordinary achievements of the cultural leaders, artists, and philanthropists who make Massachusetts a better place through their creativity and commitment.
State Treasurer Steve Grossman, who presented the award, praised the Cutlers for philanthropy in the arts that has “transformed the cultural landscape in Boston.” He singled out their involvement in restoration of the Cutler Majestic Theatre and in the reopening of the Paramount Theatre, and the creation of ArtsEmerson, as well as their involvement with the opera, the ballet, and the Citi Performing Arts Center. Grossman also cited their support for the Grow Clinic at Boston Medical Center and the Greater Boston Food Bank.
In his acceptance remarks, Cutler talked about his involvement with Emerson College and added, “if you want to talk about transformation, let’s talk about what Emerson College has done to transform the Theatre District under the leadership of President Jackie Liebergott.”
Emerson’s Cutler Majestic Theatre was named in honor of the Cutlers’ generous support of the theater’s restoration. Joan was passionate about networking and raising funds to aid others.
Other 2011 recipients of Massachusetts Cultural Council awards include the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Longwood Symphony Orchestra.
