After ‘Best American Short Story’ Success, WLP’s Treadway Releases New Book
Writing, Literature and Publishing Senior Distinguished Writer-in-Residence Jessica Treadway’s new book I Felt My Life With Both Hands has received excellent reviews.
Treadway discussed her new book with the Times Union via Yahoo. She also discussed the art of writing as well as her short story “An Early Departure,” which was selected for inclusion in the Best American Short Stories of 2025. That same story was narrated aloud by actress Cynthia Nixon on a National Public Radio segment.
Treadway’s new book consists of 13 short stories all narrated by women in the first person. She said she’s come to believe that endings are more important in short stories than they are in novels.
The ending of a short story should be bigger than all that came before it. As a reader, good short stories have often stayed with me more than novels mostly because of their conclusions.
