Underrepresented Women Championing LGBTQIA+ Rights: Hawkins
Communication Studies assistant professor Deion Hawkins writes for the academic news site The Conversation about the often less talked about trans, queer, and racialized women advocates at the heart of LGBTQIA+ advocacy, going back to the Stonewall riots and Compton’s Cafeteria riot.
Hawkins, who details these acts of protest, says that racialized trans women continue to be increasingly at risk for violence, health issues, unemployment, and distrust of law enforcement.
