Servellón an Artist Making an Impact: WBUR

Emerson alum and affiliated faculty member Maria Servellón was featured on WBUR, Boston’s NPR affiliate, as one of the station’s 2024 Makers: 10 Artists of Color Making an Impact.

Calling Servellón “a visual explorer,” WBUR talks to the filmmaker about her roots as a teenager making movies around East Boston with a Sony Handycam she got for her quinceañera, her artistic journey, and her latest film, Phantasma, which is both existential and surreal.

“There’s something that always subverts from the expected, or what you think you’re going to be in for,” she said. “I like to play with the audience in that way.”
