Richard on Social Media as a News Source: Boston Herald

Communications Studies senior affiliated faculty and BIG FISH PR CEO David Richard spoke about the non-legitimacy of social media for news, after Facebook recently altered an image of Donald Trump, and amidst AI content integration.

“It seems we haven’t learned our lesson,” referring to all the misinformation surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. “Fact checking is the first thing that goes out the window.”

He said news consumers make the mistake of believing Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, are legitimate news sources.

“Certain brands on those sites have established themselves as getting it right,” he added, and more importantly admitting when they are wrong.

“It’s so hard to police a platform like X or Facebook,” he said, “they just don’t have the same level of journalism ethics.”
