Associate professor in American Studies Roger House writes an opinion piece examining why developing countries that did not vote/voted no on President Biden’s UN resolution regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
He says Biden should reflect and learn from former President Harry Truman’s “To Secure These Rights” during the Cold War, which reported on civil rights in America.
Like Truman, Biden is engaged in a struggle between two political systems, democracy and autocracy. The countries that had doubts about the UN resolution are largely ones that had been subjected to Western imperialism. The Biden team should pay heed to their concerns, promote the values of American democracy — and acknowledge the shortfalls.
