Assistant professor of screenwriting Rae Shaw’s new transmedia web series, Black Kung Fu Chick, debuted online at the Slamdance Film Festival this month, and is available through February 25. It will be released to the public later this year.
The subject for the compelling series is a young female action hero that inspires young women of color through martial arts. It is set and filmed in South Los Angeles.
I really wanted to tell a story about the girls in that community, the young women, and their issues and concerns. I’ve definitely had a pattern that I love to write young black girls. I just really like being able to empower them. To see them blossom and find themselves as they become young adults and go out into the world.
