Pelton Supports Federal Program for Undocumented Students
Emerson College President Lee Pelton has signed a statement in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, joining more than 150 university presidents from public and private institutions across the United States who have signed a statement urging government officials to continue and expand the program.
“This is a critical call to action for leaders across a variety of sectors, and I wholeheartedly stand in support of this initiative to raise awareness for DACA. The program has successfully enabled a route for undocumented families and their children to attain a college education, pursue their passion, and add their voices and perspectives to our diverse society,” President Pelton said.
Excerpt from the statement, which was initiated by Pomona College:
To our country’s leaders we say that DACA should be upheld, continued, and expanded. We are prepared to meet with you to present our case. This is both a moral imperative and a national necessity. America needs talent – and these students, who have been raised and educated in the United States, are already part of our national community. They represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future.
