Men’s Basketball mentors Chinatown students
Five members of the Emerson Men’s Basketball Team are mentoring students at the Josiah Quincy School in Boston in conjunction with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.
The partnership allows children to bond with College athletes and serves as an opportunity to learn life skills. Big Brothers Big Sisters said it is excited for Emerson athletes to pass on skills such as teamwork, commitment, and leadership, which are essential both on and off the basketball court.
Team captain Jon Goldberg ’14 said working with the youngsters “will only help our team grow.”
“As a captain, this is what I strive for—to help others become better leaders and the best they can be,” he said.
“We are thrilled about the new partnership,” said Catherine Riede, support coordinator for the Josiah Quincy School, which is located in Chinatown and has a large percentage of children from low-income, non-native-English-speaking families. “It really builds the students’ self esteem to have an adult role model who volunteers to spend time with them one-on-one.”
The other Emerson players involved are Kirby Johnston ’16, Michael Corcoran ’16, Eli Kell-Abrams ’15, and Kyle Edwards ’16, who were all encouraged to participate by Head Coach Jim O’Brien.
O’Brien said he hoped the team’s attitude that embraces “hard work, selflessness, teamwork, and caring for others… will get passed on to these young students.”
