Snipe ’94 gets Murrow Award
Aaron Snipe ’94 has been named the recipient of the 2013 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy from the U.S. Department of State, for his work as public affairs advisor for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
This prestigious award is presented to a department employee who best exemplifies the standards of dedication, integrity, courage, sensitivity, and excellence in the field of diplomacy set by Edward R. Murrow, who was director of the United States Information Agency (USIA) from 1961 to 1964. The award consists of a certificate signed by Secretary of State John Kerry.
The award’s selection committee was impressed with Snipe’s “extraordinary innovation and creativity to promote the policy goals of the United States government across the Middle East and North Africa,” a statement read.
As a spokesperson for his respective bureau, Snipe engaged the domestic and international press to explain U.S. policy in the Middle East, particularly on Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the Middle East Peace Process.
His assignments have included two tours in Iraq. From 2010 to 2011, he coordinated the U.S. government’s civilian media and messaging efforts from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. From 2008 to 2009, he served as a public diplomacy officer and spokesperson for the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Muthanna Province.
Snipe, who speaks Arabic, held a previous role in Ethiopia. He is studying Japanese as he prepares for his next diplomatic posting in Tokyo.
