Softball team sweeps Albertus Magnus

Some late-game heroics saved the day on March 24 as the Emerson Softball team rallied back to sweep Albertus Magnus 8–6 and 6–5 (9) in a doubleheader. With the wins, Emerson is now 7–7 on the year and 4–0 in conference play as the Falcons fall to 4–8 overall and 0–4 in GNAC action.

The first game sent Lauren Jacaruso out to the circle for Emerson as the Falcons took to the board first, scoring a solo run in the first and second innings to make it 2-0 after three complete.

The fourth inning saw Emerson break it open as the Falcons struggled on defense, coughing up three errors. Amanda Horton played the hero, though, as she crushed a 1–1 pitch to right center for a two-RBI double. Brittany Rochford followed her act with an RBI single of her own before Courtney Fee matched it as well. Closing out the inning and its five runs was Rochford stealing home to close out the fourth up 5–2.

Albertus came back in the fifth inning with three runs to tie the game up as it peppered four hits on the Lions to make it five all. Emerson didn't let the stalemate last long as the team fired back in the fifth inning with three runs of their own again on two outs, with Horton adding another RBI before Rochford put up a two RBI single to make it 8–5.

Albertus scratched another run across in the seventh inning, but the effort fell short as Emerson took the 8–6 win with Jacaruso taking the win and moving to 3–2 on the year.

The second game of the doubleheader would come down to the wire as Alicia Daniele hit the circle to pitch for the Lions. A pitching battle ensued as both teams went scoreless for the first three innings. Albertus broke the tie in the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI that Emerson answered in the fifth, taking a run off a throwing error.

It remained 1–1 throughout the rest of the game until it rolled into extra innings. Albertus pushed one across in the eighth that Emerson answered yet again on an error by the Falcons to send it to the ninth inning.

Albertus scored three runs in the ninth to put Emerson against the wall in a grim situation. With the Albertus pitcher running on fumes, the Lions pounced as they led off with an RBI double from Alexandra Wysota before a walk and a single loaded the bases. A fielder's choice RBI brought it within one until a costly throwing error gave Emerson the margin it needed as players brought in two more for the walk-off 6–5 win.

The Lions will continue its GNAC season this Wednesday, March 27, as the team travels to Paxton, Massachusetts, to face Anna Maria in a double header. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
