The 2012 Emerson Softball Team had the highest grade point average in Division III last year. Pictured here are players Tatiana Motevalli-Oliner, Bianca Buono, Alexandra Magistro, Alicia Daniele, Shannon Torosian, Lauren Jacaruso and Brittany Rochford, who all graduate in 2014.

The 2012 Emerson softball team players have been recognized for earning the highest grade point average in Division III.

Posting a 3.59 cumulative GPA, the team has received the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Academic Team Award— ranking No. 1 out of 90 – for the third time since 2007. Emerson tied for the No. 1 spot with Fontbonne University.

“It’s a tribute to the kind of student-athletes we recruit and attract to Emerson,” said softball coach Phil McElroy. “Softball is great and obviously we’d love to be the top team on the playing field, but the reality is these students are here for a quality education.”

Center fielder Brittany Rochford ’14 said McElroy is “very diligent” in making sure the players are performing well academically.

“I’ve learned that staying organized is key,” Rochford said. “It’s a definite balance, but once you master it, the skills you learn directly apply to what you’re doing now and after college.”

Rochford, a Visual and Media Arts major, is not surprised at the team’s award.

“It’s expected that we do extremely well in the classroom and on the field, and if you don’t, that becomes a problem,” she said.
