2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera had its premiere at Emerson

Madame White Snake, an opera that had its world premiere in February 2010 at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, has received the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Composer Zhou Long was commissioned by Opera Boston and the Beijing Music Festival to write the music for what the Pulitzer Committee described as “a deeply expressive opera that draws on a Chinese folk tale to blend the musical traditions of the East and the West.”

Madame White Snake was Opera Boston’s first commissioned opera, and it was also Long’s first commission.
