Emersonian’s film screens at Boston festival
Beneath Contempt, a feature film by Benjamin Brewer ’10, will screen at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge on Saturday (April 30) as part of the Independent Film Festival of Boston. The film is an emotionally gripping drama about Sean Beckett, a young man who returns home after having served time in prison for causing the deaths of his friends in a car accident. One of the facts that Sean struggles with as a free man is guilt from knowing firsthand how disturbing the incident has been for the victims’ family members.
Brewer wrote and directed Beneath Contempt during his senior year at Emerson. Scenes from the movie were shot at more than 20 locations throughout Massachusetts, including inside the Middlesex County Jail in Billerica. The film has received positive responses from viewers and has been screened at several independent film festivals.
“We’re excited to have been invited to the Independent Film Festival of Boston,” said Brewer. “It’s tough as ever to build an audience for a film these days, and I can’t thank IFFB enough for encouraging emerging filmmakers like us. Our film is playing alongside new works from directors I have literally idolized for years—and I still haven’t gotten over that.”
