Student Profile: Brandon Penny ’12, Broadcast Journalism

Brandon Penny ’12 recently sat down with the Office of Communications and Marketing to discuss his internship this past summer with TeamUSA.org.

In the winter of 2010, Penny created a 90-minute special on the Winter Olympics for WEBN. Subsequently, he applied and landed an internship with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado (at the Olympic training facility). As an intern for the USOC, Penny wrote for TeamUSA.org. Penny said landing the internship was a dream come true.

“I have wanted to intern for the USOC since I heard about the opportunity,” Penny said. “I thought the internship was a reach for me, and when I got it I couldn’t believe it. I was in tears and everyone who is close to me was in tears for me because we were so happy.”

The USOC was so pleased with Penny’s work over the summer, the digital media department asked him to continue to contribute content remotely during the school year.

“I have wanted to intern for the USOC since I heard about the opportunity. I thought the internship was a reach for me, and when I got it I couldn’t believe it. I was in tears and everyone who is close to me was in tears for me because we were so happy.”

“They are keeping me on the team, and hiring me as a freelance writer,” Penny said. “I will continue to write stories as well as script a weekly video series for the site.”

On campus Penny is an Executive Producer for Emerson’s student-run news station WEBN. He recently wrapped up coverage of the News and Documentary Emmys on location in New York City and the One Nation rally in Washington, D.C. In his not so spare time, he also blogs about his experiences for Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), an organization of which he is a member.
