An Update for our Community
Dear fellow Emersonians,
On another blustery winter day here in Boston, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to our community on behalf of Emerson College’s leadership team.
This month, we find ourselves in an era of rapid change, which is inevitably leading to stress and uncertainty among many in our community and our broader society. As we continue to do our best to navigate this evolving landscape, we are guided by our many institutional strengths and united by our shared values, including our enduring commitment to building and sustaining an inclusive and caring community.
Since the change of federal administration, the College’s leadership team has been closely monitoring the impact of emerging executive orders, memos, and letters, and the pressures they bring to bear. We are analyzing the implications of these many actions, including the Feb. 14, 2025, “Dear Colleague Letter” about DEI programs, and we are actively taking steps to protect the values and the work we are invested in while complying with legal requirements.
Emerson is, and must always be, an innovative and inclusive institution where everyone belongs, feels safe, and can be their authentic selves. As a meaningful example of this commitment, Emerson will continue to strongly support our trans and non-binary communities by maintaining our existing policies and protections consistent with Massachusetts law. We also will offer our ongoing support to our international students and everyone in our community who may be affected by changing policies and pressures.
While we remain focused on these developing challenges, our efforts must continue preparing for Emerson’s future success. After 15 months of hard work, including nearly 5,000 points of community engagement, I am pleased to share that the Board of Trustees unanimously approved our new strategic plan at their February meeting. Beginning in March, we will invite the entire Emerson community to engage with this vision, contributing insights and shaping initiatives. This plan results from extensive community collaboration, and we deeply appreciate the invaluable contributions of those who helped bring it to fruition.
Emerson College is uniquely positioned to thrive at this moment in history because we champion the transformative power of the arts and communication to tell stories and create connections that advance society. We may be tested in the days ahead, but we will do everything in our power and authority to support our people, programs, and priorities. In times of division, our shared vision and values unite us as Emersonians and guide us forward together toward a brighter future.
Thank you for all you do to support our College, our community, and each other.
Sincerely,
Jay Bernhardt
President
