Presidential Inauguration: RSVP to Three Days of Celebrating Emerson

Emerson is celebrating the inauguration of the College’s 13th president the Emerson way – with three days of special events displaying our creative and academic excellence. There will be live performances, a film festival, panels, food, and more.

The formal investiture of President Bernhardt will be held Friday, March 22.

Before coming to Emerson, Bernhardt had been Dean of the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin since 2016. He was previously an administrator and faculty member at the University of Florida, Emory University, and the University of Georgia. He also served as the Director of the National Center for Health Marketing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and his doctorate is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Read Dr. Bernhardt’s full biography.

There will be numerous events spread out throughout the campus from March 20 to 22. Many of them require RSVPs before March 15, so répondez s’il vous plaît.

Wednesday, March 20

Event: Growing Up Roxbury: 150 Years of Community Luminaries
What is it?multimedia pilot exhibition of family archives, as well as live interviews, music recording sessions, dance performances, and original art from more than 150 Roxbury and Boston-area luminaries from the past two centuries
Where is it? Elma Lewis Center, 148 Boylston Street
When is it? 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Do I need to RSVP? No. Check it out at your leisure. This exhibition is also open on March 21.

Event: Inauguration Kickoff Event: Southwick Oratory Recital
What is it? The Southwick Recital features staged readings of prose, poetry, and dramatic monologue. It both honors the tradition and embraces the future of oral communication through literature.
Where is it? Robert J. Orchard Stage, Paramount Center, 559 Washington Street
When is it? 2:00-3:30 pm
Do I need to RSVP? Yes. Register for the recital.

Event: With Love, From the Margins: Students at Emerson Subverting Erasure
What is it? An experiential college-pathway gallery that affirms our students’ right to exist, resists systemic erasure, and reimagines a culture where all have access to higher education. The gallery features work by students with the Emerson Prison Initiative and our free college-access programs, EmersonWRITES and EmersonTHEATRE.
Where is it? HIVE, Tufte PPC Entrance, 10 Boylston Place
When is it? 2:30-4:30 pm
Do I need to RSVP? No.

Event: Gender-Affirming Voice (GAV) Experiential Panel
What is it? The Gender-Affirming Voice and Communication Program is housed in the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Department. This panel will discuss the inception of the program and its impact on the trans/non-binary and Emerson communities, as well as our CSD graduate students.

Event: Emerson Prison Initiative (EPI) Alumni Panel
What is it? Hosted by EPI, this panel will discuss the many positive impacts of expanding access to an Emersonian education to people incarcerated in Massachusetts.

Event: 23rd Annual Emerson Film Festival
What is it? This curated film festival showcases the works of current students and alumni.

Event: Artificial Intelligence, Communication, and the Arts
What is it? This panel will discuss the possibilities, opportunities, and challenges related to the use of AI in storytelling through communication and the arts.

Event: Putting Arts to Work: Emerson as Laboratory for Artistic Innovation
What is it? Hosted by ArtsEmerson and HowlRound, this panel will explore Emerson programs that use performance as a tool to inspire conversation and change and to build community.

Event: Choreography of Light Panel and Screening
What is it? Emerson College is one of the few schools that supports a full analog and 16mm filmmaking curriculum. This panel discussion and short film screening will feature Emerson staff and faculty members who engage in the highly specialized process of analog filmmaking.

Event: LOL @ Emerson: A Celebration of Comedy
What is it? This stand-up comedy showcase features alumni, students, and friends.

Event: Official Investiture Ceremony
What is it? The official Investiture ceremony to install Dr. Jay M. Bernhardt as the 13th president of Emerson College. The ceremony will also be livestreamed at emerson.edu/live.
Where is it? Cutler Majestic Theatre, 219 Tremont Street
When is it? Guest arrival is 10:00 to 10:30 am, ceremony is 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

Event: Community Celebration Lunch Reception
What is it? A celebratory lunch with our new president
