Romanska on Sophocles and the COVID Pandemic: Antigone

Performing Arts Professor Magda Romanska writes in Antigone: An Open Forum for Classics, that the play, Antigone, written by Sophocles in the fifth century BCE, illustrates the problem of reconciling politics and public health demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Antigone is a political play about a government forced to decide between its two survival modes: the ‘biopower’ of sanitary considerations, and the universality of the law — both essential to the survival of the state as a political structure and as a communal entity,” Romanska writes.
