Gellman on El Salvador President Running for Re-election: The Dialogue

Mneesha Gellman, associate professor of political science, shared her insight for a Q&A “How Can Bukele Run Again Despite a Constitutional Ban?” regarding El Salvador President Nayib Bukele recently announcing he will run for re-election:

Numerous political events in El Salvador since 2019 illustrate a dramatic process of democratic backsliding. With each additional power grab, Bukele is exceeding traditional populist strongman tactics and veers into the dangerous territory of gutting El Salva-dor’s democratic infrastructure. His decision to run for re-election despite a constitutional prohibition on doing so is a continuation of a strategy to undermine the rule of law and consolidate personal power. Such an approach to governance does not bode well for a healthy democracy.
