Ryan on the Future of Movies: Christian Science Monitor

Mike S. Ryan, independent filmmaker and assistant professor of Visual and Media Arts, spoke to The Christian Science Monitor’s chief culture writer about how movie releases and other shared cultural experiences may be altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The community aspect of in-person gatherings, for arts events like so many others, is a challenge. Ryan says because we as humans seek out interpersonal connections and contact, theatres will remain in some capacity.

I believe that we are going to eventually, soon return to the Cinema Club situation that we had in the ’60s, where people are able to gather together in small clubs to show films that do not exist on streaming and thus it will be like live music or a singular experience. I think that eventually that might go to a subscription model.
