Filmmaker Granik talks to students

Debra Granik, an Academy Award–nominated director from Cambridge, Massachusetts, stopped by the Paramount Center’s Bright Family Screening Room on February 26 for a discussion and screening of her first documentary feature, Stray Dog.

Granik took questions from students in the audience during the event, which was sponsored by the Visual and Media Arts Department and moderated by Associate Professor John Gianvito.

Stray Dog is about Ron “Stray Dog” Hall, a combat veteran with a love for motorcycles and small dogs. The documentary examines Hall, who, like thousands of combat veterans, craves the thrill, camaraderie, and sense of mission that motorcycles provide, while simultaneously seeking solace in the small dogs that embody an oath to care and protect unconditionally.

Granik, also director of Winter’s Bone, has been nominated for four Oscars and won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
