Internship Fair students share success stories

Fifty employers are expected to set up informational booths at this semester’s Internship Fair, which has a high success rate in getting Emerson students work experience at top companies in their chosen career fields.

The fair is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, 1:00-4:00 pm, at the Courtyard Marriott Boston Tremont Hotel at 275 Tremont Street, next to the Shubert Theatre. According to the Career Services Office, which organizes the fair, 100 percent of employers who participated in a post-fair survey (30 businesses) reported hiring an Emerson student as an intern after meeting him or her at the Internship Fair in the Fall 2013 semester.

“There are so many opportunities at the Internship Fair,” said E. Aaron Ledwith ’13, a former Communication Studies major who landed three internships with the Hill Holliday advertising agency as a result of a previous Internship Fair.

David Wilson, MA ’14, became an intern at the Boston Herald last summer because of an Internship Fair at Emerson.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Wilson, a Journalism major. “I had to act as both a reporter and cameraman. It was a big challenge, but ended up being rewarding because I learned a lot.”

Prior to his internship with the Herald’s web video unit, Wilson said he “couldn’t even turn on a camera” but quickly “felt like I was a member of their team.”

“I think you have to go into an internship with an eagerness and a willingness to learn,” Wilson said. “The sign of a great internship is that it takes you out of your comfort zone.”

“I owe most of my success at this point to going to the Internship Fair and making those connections,” said Ledwith, who now works as a client services associate at DataXu, ranked in August 2013 by INC Magazine as the fastest growing advertising and marketing company.

Ledwith ran Hill Holliday’s table at the Fall 2013 Internship Fair.

“Unless you already have an internship or job lined up, the Internship Fair should be a high priority in my eyes,” he said.

Ledwith’s advice for students: “There is nothing worse than a student coming up to the table and not knowing what your company is or does. Having this knowledge before you approach the table will give you a huge leg up, and it will give you something to talk about with the recruiter.”

Students can participate in preparation sessions for the Internship Fair with Career Services, 216 Tremont Street, 6th Floor, now until Monday, February 24, at the following times: Thursday, February 20, 3:00–4:00 pm; Friday, February 21, 4:00–5:00 pm; and Monday, February 24, 4:00–5:00 pm.

Some of the businesses and organizations at this semester’s Internship Fair include but are not limited to: 826 Boston, American Public Television, ArtsBoston/Bostix, Boston Ballet, Boston Herald, Boston Neighborhood Network, Callanan & Klein Communications, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporate Accountability International, Da Capo Press, Harvard Business Publishing, Mass Challenge, MENTOR, NESN (New England Sports Network), Speak Easy Stage Company, Viewpoint Creative, and WCVB-TV (Channel 5).
