Writing major joins Emerson LA

Having grown up in southern Connecticut, Caitlin Anders ’14 is ready to experience the West Coast.

“The view is probably spectacular,” said Anders, a Writing, Literature and Publishing major. “There’s a patio off of the common room that overlooks the Hollywood sign with a fire pit and grills, so I’m excited to see that.”

Anders, a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, will work as an editorial intern for SpinMedia, a pop culture and entertainment blog. It’s her first experience in entertainment writing; this past semester she interned with Cambridge.com as a food writer.

“I got to bring myself and a friend to a restaurant and we got to eat for free, which was great—so much fun,” she said.

While at Emerson, Anders worked for the digital literary journal The Catharsis as nonfiction editor.

“I love The Catharsis because it’s all about creative writing. That’s my passion,” she said. “I really love being able to improve myself as a writer and improve others as writers and learn from the whole editing process.”

Her last and most rewarding piece for the online journal, “When You’re Doing Your Best,” was about what growing up means for everyone.

“When I was promoted to nonfiction editor at The Catharsis, it showed me that I’ve grown a lot as a writer and that people were trusting my abilities to help,” she said. “It really showed me how much Emerson has enabled me to do.”

Anders will put her writing to the test in Los Angeles with the chance to experience the professional life of the city.

“I definitely do imagine myself there,” she said. “I think it’s going to be awesome.”
