em Magazine, Emerson’s oldest print publication and lifestyle magazine, has released its winter 2014 issue in a larger format—increasing from 8.5 by 11 inches to 10 by 13 inches—giving readers “the best possible viewing experience,” said editor-in-chief James Emmerman ’15.
“It gives that traditional fashion magazine feel,” Emmerman said. “It’s more comparable to one of the industry magazines.”
The new issue, which Emmerman calls “art-heavy,” is also available online.
“We decreased the page count so we could make the page size bigger,” Emmerman said. “We didn’t have to cut back on content because we increased the page size, so we have more space for content on each page.”
The back of the issue features “Runaways,” a photo essay that resulted from a photo shoot using models outdoors on Cape Cod beaches last fall.
“The whole point of the shoot was the contrast,” Emmerman said. “You have a very simplistic Cape Cod in the background with two rugged looking runway models. The photographers and creative editors really nailed that contrast beautifully.”
Emmerman said he worked on the photo shoot and production along with photographer Evan Tetreault ’14, photographic director Zeynep Abes ’15, and fashion director Danielle Brizel ’15.
Emmerman said he, Abes, and others also worked the entire semester building sets that were used in a photo shoot called “Spotlight,” which features photos and interviews of Emerson students about their hometowns: Dayton, Ohio; Laguna Beach, California; and New Orleans, Louisiana.
Print copies of em Magazine are now available in campus buildings and select retailers around Boston.
