UPDATE: On October 16, 2013, Rasmussen was named a finalist for the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry.

Matt Rasmussen, MFA ’04, has been selected for the National Book Award Longlist for Poetry for his debut collection, Black Aperture (2013, Louisiana State University Press), which already won the 2012 Walt Whitman Award.

Black Aperture is a moving collection of poetry Rasmussen composed while coming to terms with his brother’s tragic suicide, refusing to focus on the expected pathos, blurring the edge between grief and humor.

The National Book Award is a prestigious award administered by the National Book Foundation. Approximately 150 poetry titles are submitted each year, and each panel selects 10 titles to be included in the “Longlist,” which is announced in mid-September. From the Longlist, five finalists are announced in mid-October.

Rasmussen came back to Emerson last spring to help judge the Graduate Poetry Award for the Writing, Literature, and Publishing Department.
