Students promote international art event

Artwork by David Silvah that will be featured in Baja Meets Boston this weekend.

Mexican artist David Silvah and several Communication Studies students will combine forces Friday, December 7, for Baja Meets Boston, an exhibition and celebration of international art at the SOWA Artists Guild in Boston’s South End.

Silvah will collaborate with Cincinnati artist Maurice Sanderson to display, create, and auction original work throughout the weekend. Associate Professor Gregory Payne has selected several of his students to promote the event. Payne has been involved in projects with Silvah for the past few years.

Danielle Kerins, MA ’13, a Communication Management major, has worked with the artists and SOWA to promote the weekend events.

“We're trying to take action around President Pelton’s civic engagement initiative,” she said. “Baja Meets Boston ties in public affairs, public diplomacy, some social media, and promoting events cross-culturally.”

Responsibilities range from online promotions to poster design and distribution, and the students will assist at events throughout the weekend.

“It's about community,” Kerins said. “And for me, it’s a very hands-on experience.”

Baja Meets Boston consists of an open-gallery event on Friday night, a collaborative painting made by Silvah and Sanderson Saturday afternoon, and concludes with a silent auction of the resulting work at Fajitas & ’Ritas restaurant on Saturday evening.
