Longtime faculty honored for years of service
Faculty and family members gathered April 26 to honor the accomplishments of five of Emerson’s long-serving faculty. Visual and Media Arts (VMA) Associate Professor Stephen Shipps was honored for having taught at the College for 40 years, while VMA associate professors Donald Fry and Michael Selig and Writing, Literature and Publishing (WLP) Professor Flora Gonzalez were celebrated for reaching landmarks of 25 years. Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Cynthia Bartlett, who will be retiring at the end of this academic year, received special recognition for her 26 years at the College.
The Office of Academic Affairs sponsored the event, and gave each honoree a certificate of service and a Tiffany’s gift. Colleagues and President Jacqueline Liebergott thanked the honorees for their dedication to the College.
40 years
VMA Associate Professor Stephen Shipps has received the distinguished Gold Key Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to being a student favorite and a talented instructor, Shipps has also served as a fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities and the Getty Center for Education in the Arts. He also previously held the position of chair of the Education Committee of the College Art Association.
25 years
VMA Associate Professor Donald Fry previously headed the Emerson Department of Speech Education, as well as Television and Film. His work has been published in many communications journals, such as The Journal of Communication Inquiry and Communication Yearbook. Before coming to Emerson, he worked at Wichita State University, Ohio State University, and West Virginia University.
WLP Professor Flora Gonzalez specializes in Latin American fiction and culture. She is currently writing a memoir about her experience as a Cuban American, tentatively titled On the Other Side of the Glass, and has been anthologized in a number of publications. Her credits also include two nonfiction books, Jose Donoso’s House of Fiction: A Dramatic Construction of Time and Place (1995) and Guarding Cultural Memory: Afro-Cuban Women in Literature and the Arts (2006). She has previously served as a fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, and has taught at the University of Chicago, Middlebury College, and Dartmouth College.
VMA Associate Professor Michael Selig accepts his award. VMA Associate Professor Michael Selig is a former chair of the VMA Department. He is a former editor of The Journal of Film and Video and has previously taught at the University of Vermont, Rosary College, and the University of Texas. He also taught at his alma mater, Northwestern University, where he received his PhD in radio, TV, and film.
25+ and retiring
CSD Associate Professor Cynthia Bartlett serves as the graduate program director in the CSD Department. Bartlett’s work as an educator draws upon her previous experience in speech pathology and as a clinician treating adults in hospitals and chronic care.
