Students Come to the Internship Fair Well Prepared

Emerson students looking for real-world experience do not have far to go. Emerson’s bi-annual internship fair held at the Courtyard Boston Tremont Hotel offers students a chance to explore opportunities at a wide variety of businesses and organizations.

The Career Services office hosted its Fall 2010 Internship fair on October 20. More than 50 employers from industries such as television, theater, and radio had tables at the fair. Emerson student Alyssa Marino ’12 hopes to intern with a company in the spring or summer of 2011. “I have a list of my top three employers, so hopefully I’ll be able to speak with them and come out of here with more confidence for when I actually apply to internships. My goal is to get an internship in the journalism field, preferably in the newsroom,” she said.

Marino and other students were well prepared for the internship search. Marketing Communication major Carley Caesar ’12 shared her personal strategy for success. “To get ready for the internship fair, I researched the companies that I was interested in. With each of my resumes, I emphasized parts that I thought were important to each company and make me stand out as a student.”

Emerson students do stand out, according to Mike Nadeau MA ’08, an employer from American Public Television. Nadeau works as a Communications Coordinator and received a master’s degree in Print Journalism at Emerson. “Almost every intern we’ve had, and a lot of the employees we’ve had over the last couple years, have been Emerson students,” Nadeau said. “We hire them because they have a great background in media, in social networking, and they are up to date on current technology. They really fit in with our needs as a television company.” Nadeau was one of fourteen recruiters who were Emerson alumni.
