Meet Student Guest Tweeter Valerie Molina ’11

Val Molina ’11 has enthusiastically tweeted and Facebooked for years. So it was only natural that she would apply for a position–and be hired as–a social media associate in the College’s Office of Communications and Marketing new student work program.

During the week of October 18, Molina, a Marketing Communication major, will take the reins as the College’s first guest student tweeter at twitter.com/EmersonCollege. All week, Molina will post tweets, representing the College to the world. She takes her guest-tweeter responsibilities seriously: “It’s important for Emerson College to be a leader in social media.”

“I’m thinking of bringing more personal touches to the account. Like what it’s really like to be an Emersonian…. If I were a student applying for college, I would definitely check out the college’s Twitter account.”

Hailing from Valley Stream, New York, Molina says her social media use began in high school, where she passed through the parade of social-media sites that rose and fell in the 1990s: Friendster, MySpace, Xanga, and others. “I tested out all different kinds of things.” Then she started a Facebook account and never turned back. “It feels like forever.”

She learned about Twitter — which was launched in 2006 — during her freshman year at Emerson, when two professors independently mentioned the newest social networking/microblogging site in class. “I got excited about sharing my opinion. When I hit 2,000 tweets, I knew I was hooked.”

What should followers expect the week Molina takes over? “I’m thinking of bringing more personal touches to the account. Like what it’s really like to be an Emersonian.” She also plans to tweet about upcoming events, and to connect with prospective students. “If I were a student applying for college, I would definitely check out the college’s Twitter account.”

Besides her work in the Office of Communications and Marketing, Molina is an active member of EmComm, Kappa Gamma Chi, and CPLA (Communications, Politics and Law Association).
