It was a good week for Emerson College student-athletes. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) honored six different players in five sports during the week ending September 12. Three were named Player of the Week, two were selected Rookie of the Week, and one was picked for the Weekly Honor Roll.
Lauren Zaniboni ’11 was named the GNAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week. In 2009 Zaniboni was named the most valuable player of the Western New England College Invitational Tournament. The Lions won the tournament, which included three teams that competed in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Zaniboni led the Lions to the tournament title with a 4-0 record as she averaged 2.94 kills, 2.38 digs, and 1.5 blocks per game.
In cross–country, Heather Hoglund ’13 was a Player of the Week pick for her second place finish in the Lt. Travis Fuller Memorial Invitational held at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Hoglund was second of 101 women in the race, running a 6:14 pace over the 5K course. Hoglund was the top finisher of the five GNAC teams involved in the race.
Women’s tennis team member Lacey Russell ’14 rounded out the Player of the Week selections. Russell has started her collegiate career at No. 1 singles by winning every game in which she has played. She defeated her opponent from Wentworth Institute of Technology 6-0, 6-0 in 29 minutes. She then led Emerson to a 7-2 GNAC victory over Suffolk University, beating the Suffolk No. 1 (who was a 2009 GNAC All-conference pick) 6-0, 6-0. She also teamed up with Savannah Mosser ‘14 in both matches to sweep the first doubles points.
Mosser was named the GNAC Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week. Mosser started her Emerson tennis career with two straight set wins at #2 singles by defeating her opponent from Wentworth 6-1, 6-0, then downing her foe from Suffolk (who was a 2009 GNAC All-conference pick) 6-2, 6-3. Teaming with Russell, the tandem has won the first doubles point in each match by scores of 8-0 and 8-4 respectively.
The Men’s Cross–Country Rookie of the Week was Brendan Stackhouse ’14. Also competing at the Lt. Travis Fuller Invitational meet, Stackhouse took fifth place out of 81 runners in the men’s division. He ran a 5:27 mile pace over the 8K course.
