Students score in TV, film writing contests

Nine Emerson undergraduate and graduate students from Visual and Media Arts Assistant Professor Jim Macak's TV Pilot Writing and Writing the Short Subject courses were recently chosen as winners and finalists in six national writing contests.

In the Undergraduate Short Screenplay Competition at the 2010 Ivy Film Festival, Evan Jackson '11 won for his script Crazy Magnet, and Ted Marsden '12 was one of four finalists for his script cc: Evil. David Humphreys MFA' 12, was one of two finalists in the festival's Graduate Student Short Screenplay category, for his script Harvey & Lloyd.

At the Rhode Island International Film Festival, Professional Studies student Rachel Guerrieri won the ScriptBiz Shorts Contest for her script The Petty Rivalries of Mary and Cathleen. At the American Gem Literary Festival, Christina Brandmeier (Dec) '10 is competing against 24 other finalists for her script Beer Bonding. The winner will be announced on April 27.

In the Acclaim TV Pilot Writing competition, TV pilot scripts Graveside Manners by Sasha Garron '10, Blood Wishes by Arielle Shapiro '11, and Saving Face by Nicholas Bell '10 were chosen as three of the six finalists. Lisa Frye '10 made it to the semifinals with her pilot, Queer Theory.

Geoffry Tarulli, MFA '11, will have his short film script You Looked Like You Were Having Fun Up There presented at the University Film and Video Association's National Conference at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, August 10–14.
