Markowitz ’99 on Designing Authentic ’70s Sets: Interior Design
Film alum Jonah Markowitz ’99 was interviewed in Interior Design magazine about his work as production designer for the 1970s-set HBO series Duster.
Markowitz, who also designed the biopics Mapplethorpe and George & Tammy, and is currently working on a remake of the TV series Little House on the Prairie, talked about how he approaches period pieces, honoring the characters, the importance of color palettes, and how he got into the business:
“In film school [at Emerson], I would direct but also often design friends’ and classmates’ films. My first internship was at Konrad Pictures, a production company owned and run by Kathy Conrad and James Mangold. Within a few weeks, they asked if I would come on as a full-time employee. One of the executives I worked for invited me to a barbecue where I met my first mentor, designer Tom Meyer. He interviewed me and a few weeks later, I became a PA for a film he was art directing called Crazy/Beautiful.“
