ArtsEmerson, as well as several Emerson faculty members and alums, were recognized recently by BroadwayWorld for excellence within the Boston theatre scene.

The 2022 BroadwayWorld Boston Awards, honor the best regional productions, touring shows, and individual achievements, as voted by the theatergoing public. Eligible shows ran from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022.

ArtsEmerson’s November 2021 world premiere of …(Iphigenia), created by jazz legend Wayne Shorter and Grammy Award-winning musician esperanza spalding, was awarded Best Production of an Opera (Professional). Travis Alabanza was a runner-up for Best Cabaret/Concert/Solo Performance (Professional) for his show, Burgerz, presented by ArtsEmerson in April 2022.

Emerson voice instructor Todd Gordon won Best Music Direction & Orchestra Performance (Professional) for his work on Wheelock Family Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz, a show that Performing Arts affiliated faculty member Chelsea Kerl designed costumes, earning her a runner-up spot for Best Costume Design of a Play or Musical (Professional).  Seth Bodie ’98 also was a runner up in the same category for his costume design on Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater’s Straight White Men.

Sally Ashton Forrest ’86 was both the winner of (Something Rotten) and a runner-up in (Hair) Best Choreography of a Play or Musical (Non-Professional) for her work with The Company Theatre of Norwell.

Performing Arts affiliated faculty member Larry Sousa was a runner-up for Best Choreography of a Play or Musical (Professional) for Lyric Stage Company’s A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, and affiliated faculty member Janie Howland was a runner-up for Best Scenic Design of a Play or Musical (Professional) for Reagle Music Theatre’s West Side Story.
