Gray, Eagan, & Oscar Buzz: Variety Magazine

As the 94th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 27, Variety awards editor Tim Gray writes that Hollywood has two races underway – the one with Oscar-nominated films themselves, and “the other is the surrounding mini-industry that involves campaigners, contenders, agents, journalists and Oscar pundits.”

Gray references the work of Communication Studies senior lecturer Owen Eagan for the latter race, whose book Oscar Buzz and the Influence of Word of Mouth on Movie Success published in 2020. Gray is also quoted in the work.

Gray says the Oscar buzz race is different this year due to a few factors, including COVID-19, no Golden Globes ceremony, changes in voting, and others.
