Director of Office of International Student Affairs (OISA)

After a successful national search, the Office of Internationalization & Global Engagement (IGE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrea Popa as the next Director of the Office of International Student Affairs (OISA).
 
Andrea joins Emerson College after 16 years in Boston University’s International Students and Scholars Office, where she held the role of Associate Director for Student Services, overseeing immigration support services for over 10,000 international students.  Andrea brings an impressive breadth of experience and knowledge in the area of developing collaborative cross-campus programming with orientation, residence life, career services, health services, and academic support units. Andrea specializes in F-1 and J-1 student immigration advising, policy and system development, and intercultural training. In addition, she has experience in immigration processing for faculty and researchers in H-1B specialty worker and J-1 scholar exchange categories. 
 

Andrea holds a Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations from Lesley University, and she is a frequent presenter at professional conferences regionally and nationally. Andrea is a long-standing member of NAFSA Region XI Government Regulations Advisory Committee (GRAC), and a former member of NAFSA International Student/Scholar Regulatory Subcommittee (ISS-RP), and NAFSA Trainer Corps, and a curriculum team member for the “J-1 Beginners” Continuing Education Program (CEP).

 
Andrea spent her childhood and high school years in Portugal, including Lisboa, Coimbra, and Terceira Island in the Azores. She also lived and worked in Bucharest, Romania. Andrea and her husband Cristian have two teenage daughters, Gabrielle and Maia. Andrea is a Girl Scout leader to a troop of 7th grade Cadettes, a theater enthusiast, registered voter, pie-baker, world traveler, and global foodie.
 
Andrea will officially assume her duties on Monday, December 10, 2018.  As chair of the search committee for this position, I would like to thank the following Emerson colleagues who served on the committee: David Griffin, Matthew Phelan, Amanda Turnley, Jeremy Heflin, Sharon Duffy, and Michael Holland.
