Andrade-Watkins Recognized by Cape Verde
The Government of Cape Verde has honored Emerson Professor Claire Andrade-Watkins for her contributions to Cape Verdean culture.
Teaching in the Institute for Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies, Andrade-Watkins was one honoree of 40 selected in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Cape Verdean national independence.
Andrade-Watkins’ scholarship focuses on French and Portuguese-speaking African cinema. Her 2006 film, “Some Kind of Funny Porto Rican?”: A Cape Verdean American Story, is a critically acclaimed documentary about the Cape Verdean community in the Fox Point section of Providence, Rhode Island, a unique community of the Africana Diaspora.
About 800 people attended the September 26 gala, which was held at the Venus de Milo restaurant in Swansea, Massachusetts.
