Joshua Banta ’09 is one of several filmmakers traveling to Beijing, China, to participate in the state-sponsored Beijing International Screenwriting Competition on June 9.

Banta, who majored in Visual and Media Arts, is one of five winners in the feature film category who will be flown to the Chinese capital for an all-expenses-paid trip.

In addition to receiving a $1,000 cash prize, Banta will meet and pitch Chinese film producers and financiers.

The Hollywood Reporter and Los Angeles Times reported on the competition, which examined 1,000 submissions from 127 United States colleges and universities. It is seen as part of a campaign by the Chinese government to shape international perception of China through the production of films made by Americans about China.

Banta’s film is titled Tusk, but no other information is being released on the project until after the competition.
