Communication Studies awards given
Several graduating students in the Department of Communication Studies were awarded May 3 for their academic excellence and outstanding contributions during their time at Emerson. Interim Chair John Anderson emceed the event in the Charles Beard Room.
The students with the highest grade point averages were Caroline Fothergill ’13, a Communication Studies major with a GPA of 3.97; and Meghan DeMarsh ’13, a Political Communication major with a 3.94 GPA.
Maria Warith ’13, a Virginia native who began college at the age of 15, and transferred to Emerson in 2011, won the Communication Studies Chair’s Award, which is bestowed upon a student who exemplifies civic engagement, student leadership and ethical decision-making. Warith, a Political Communication major, started a non-profit organization to help underserved youth at the age of 16.
The awards for Outstanding Student went to Caelan McAfee-Torco ’13, a Communication Studies major; and Sophie Meuch ’13, a Political Communication major.
The Helen and Cecil Rose Awards, which recognize students who further Emerson’s tradition of excellence in forensics and oral interpretation, had four winners. The Rose Forensics Award went to Erica Irigoyen ’13, Colby Jackson ’13 and Jason Margaritis ’13. Quinn Marcus ’13 won the Rose Oral Interpretation Award.
Scholar-In-Residence Spencer Kimball recognized four students who won for Outstanding Capstone Projects for 2012-2013: Communication Studies majors Amy Sherman ’13, Risa McKenzie ’13, and Political Communication majors Daniel Diaz ’13 and Sophie Meuch ’13.
