Tom Guganig passes away

President Jacqueline Liebergott shared the sad news that retired staff member Tom Guganig of Monroe, N.H., died May 13, 2011, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H., at the age of 70.

Guganig was an alumnus of the Emerson College class of 1969 with a B.S. in Speech and a major in TV/Video. Before attending Emerson, after graduating from McIndoe Falls Academy, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the carrier Lake Champlain. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he entered Emerson. Eighteen years after getting his bachelor’s degree in TV/Video, he received a master’s degree in 1987 in Media Studies from Emerson.

For approximately 25 years, he was the manager of the television studios at Emerson’s Back Bay campus and then in the new studios in the Tufte Performance and Production Center. He retired in 2006. Up until his retirement, Guganig had spent 20 years as the student advisor of the National Broadcasting Society. He kept active in the national organization in his retirement and attended the national convention at Universal Studios in Hollywood in March 2011.

Guganig lived in Everett, Mass., for many years prior to retiring to the family home in Monroe, N.H. In Monroe, he worked on many projects for the community, including photography, videography, editing, and historical videotaping and archiving. He was a member of the McIndoe Falls Academy Alumni Association and worked to complete the digital archiving on the history of the Academy.

Calling hours will be Friday (May 20) from 6 to 8 pm at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, New Hampshire, A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday (May 21) at 10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 15 Pine Street, Woodsville. Burial will follow in the Monroe Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to either Cottage Hospital, P.O. Box 2001, Woodsville, NH 03785 or to the New England Organ Bank, 60 First Avenue, Waltham, MA 02451.
