A chat with Steve Yarbrough

Acclaimed author and Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing Professor Steve Yarbrough recently sat down with Emerson’s Office of Public Affairs to talk about what Boston offers to promising writers not only with its history but with the accomplished novelists who call it home. He also spoke about Emerson’s large and talented Creative Writing faculty, and the accomplishments of students in the program.

Yarbrough’s latest book, Safe from the Neighbors (Knopf, 2010), was released in January to rave reviews. In 2006, his novel The End of California (Knopf) was a finalist for the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award for fiction. Prisoners of War (Knopf, 2004) was a finalist for the 2005 PEN/Faulkner Award, and The Oxygen Man (MacAdam/Cage, 1999) won the California Book Award, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award for fiction, and the Mississippi Authors Award. Yarbrough’s writing has appeared in Best American Short Stories, Best American Mystery Stories, and the Pushcart Prize Anthology. His work has been published in Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, Japan, and Poland.
