Imani Kasai on Femgore Genre: Boston Globe

Writing, Literature, and Publishing assistant professor and popular fiction expert Kristen Imani Kasai shares her perspective on femgore, a type of horror sub-category that is expanding in popularity.

“A lot of violence in horror is done to women,” said Imani Kasai, referring to popular tropes like the “final girl.” “Most horror is filtered by the male gaze. It upholds patriarchal standards of punishing women. And we’re tired of it. Why not tell our own stories?”

“We can use the genre to investigate our own fears of pain, suffering, and mortality.”
