Struck on Persistence of Local Reporters and Nonprofits: Christian Science Monitor

Senior Journalist-in-Residence Doug Struck writes for the Christian Science Monitor about what inspires local journalists and nonprofit organizations to continue to report.

The article highlights Margaret Coker, co-founder of The Current in Georgia, a nonprofit news organization that she created five years ago after working in the newspaper industry.

The Current has written about a system of predatory lending in the state, exposed sheriffs making millions by charging for phone and video calls by jail detainees, and police misconduct cases.

“There’s plenty of pent-up demand” for these stories, Ms. Coker says. “It’s not because we vote Democrat or Republican. … It’s because we live here and we want a better society.”

Included in the article is VTDigger reporter Audi Guha, MA ’02, who recently wrote about the federal administration’s decision to restrict the Head Start program based on immigration status.
