Little Building Architects Honored by Professional Society

Elkus Manfredi Architects won a 2023 Merit Award from the Society of Registered Architects (SARA) for their reimagining of Emerson’s Little Building.

“Utilizing innovative technology, materials, and design techniques, designers recapture the original splendor of Emerson College’s historic Little Building, meet students’ needs on Emerson’s downtown campus, and make a strong case for the use of embodied carbon reductions as a driver for preservation and adaptive reuse of our built environment,” the judges wrote.

After a two-year renovation, the building was reopened in 2019 with 290 additional beds, along with performance space and retail tenants. In 2021, the Boston Preservation Alliance gave the building its Preservation Award.
